Shooting ranges need to provide a safe operating environment and mitigate a range of risks including but not limited to ricochet, fire and damaging sound.

Acoustic tiles are one element of a solution but typical tiles are either repurposed commercial or residential tiles or purpose designed granulated rubber tiles.

These tiles have inherent weaknesses:

• highly porous and retain burnt and unburnt powder increasing the risk of fire and explosion in a ballistics environment

• certain tiles can include a silica base which becomes airborne when shot.

Eliminating the risk of ricochet and fire is of critical importance in all live fire training environments.

Metal surfaces in target zones increase the risk of ricochet and range operators use an array of industrial products to manage this risk and the risk of fire.

Typical ballistic curtains include structural sheathing, belted rubber [FRAS] and hot and cold vulcanized rubber. Each of these have vulnerabilities including:

• high flammability

• poor durability

• material mass loss when shot

• high total cost of ownership.

Many also require complicated and expensive mounting systems.
